Summer Power-packed Team Training

Special Summer Introductory Team Trainings

This is a special configuration of training designed for many districts to send a few people to a common site in order to gain a sound foundation on the highest level of crisis response/emergency planning and how this all fits with prevention. It is designed to be very cost effective and provide hands-on skills and concepts so each district can have a few key people who come back from the training prepared to take the district to the next level. No matter where your district is currently with crisis response teams, plans, practice and response, there will be comprehensive new information that will catapult your response capacity to new heights. This three-day training works especially well when the local Educational Services Agency (BOCES, IU, ESD) or County Education Office coordinates the process of reserving the room and registering participants. The cost is shared among the districts unless the county organization has funds and wishes to provide this opportunity for the districts. The cost runs between $ 1,000 - $ 1,500 per district, depending on how many districts participate and how many participants each district wishes to send. Additionally, there is a per-person materials fee for the Crisis Resource Manual and Training Manual set with an option for the Safe Room book.

Role of the IU/BOCES/ESD/County Office

The county office usually disseminates the information to all districts, generating interest at superintendent's meetings and other venues. When enough districts agree to participate, the county agency works with CMI staff to set aside the date, reserve the room and handle other details. Additionally, the county agency handles the registration process and collects the registration fees from their districts.

Goals of the training

Participants will gain a new and expanded vision of crisis response, prevention and school climate as a continuum. The focus will be on the pragmatics of crisis response in terms of meeting the human element, including needs of students, staff and parents. Participants return from the training ready to revamp any weaknesses in the current plan, inservice teachers and others in order to permeate the whole system with concepts that begin to improve school climate, prevent smaller crises from becoming larger ones, and to reinforce what is already in place that works well.

Content of the training:

  • Administrative and organizational issues in crisis response
  • Common pitfalls
  • The checklist of things to do
  • Templates for letters, announcements, press releases and more
  • Grief issues for students and staff
  • Overview of suicide causes and prevention
  • Role of trauma in school responses
  • Empowering teachers to respond well
  • Networking, goal-setting for one's own district, taking it to the next level
  • Process:
