Training for School Safe Room Plans
Overview: The Safe Room is a place set aside for those students who need extra time to grieve the loss of a loved one before being able to return to academics. This is the heart of crisis response from the student perspective. Aspects as diverse as appropriate activities by age as well as behavior management in the aftermath of crisis or tragedy are covered. Philosophy, room set-up, supplies, rules, handouts for parents, students and teachers are all included.
Goals: Knowledge and understanding of the philosophy and function of the Safe Room, skill-building. Intended audience: Counselors, school psychologists, any mental health practitioners, school nurses, teachers, para-professionals, bi-lingual aides, others who are "naturals" at compassionate listening and who are those students are drawn to seek out. Content: Philosophy of the Safe Room, pragmatics of operation, rules, activities, serving diverse populations, parent and staff Safe Rooms, materials and supplies, behavior management.
