CMI Leadership Training

August 25-27, 2008

The CMI Leadership Academy is open to anyone who has had the full Foundational Training (often given as the "Five Day Team Training"
for districts and regional programs). This initial training puts in place a crisis response team in the district or takes a team from where it is to the next level up of capacity and skill. After the Foundational Training is in place, districts can choose one or a few team members or administrators who will become their key group who will continue to "grow" the concepts, inservices, continued organizational honing and other aspects of continuing to keep a team working well over time.

Content areas for the Leadership Academy will include (over time):
- Enhancing organizational strategies
- Complicated responses involving more than one building
- Catastrophic events - when lives are at threat on campus during the school day
- Care and feeding of the team over the long haul
- Inservicing teachers to take ownership of their role in crisis response
- Specific areas related to lock-downs, evacuations, relocating students and reuniting them with parents
- Bomb threats and bomb searches
- Threat assessment
- Managing chaos and preventing or mitigating trauma in major events
- Managing media relations during school crises
- Mutual aide -- making the most of collaborative efforts

These will be offered over time. We ask that those who choose to become a part of the Leadership Academy have a commitment to staying with the role of being a key person within their district for several years, attending the Academy once a year. (We may offer the same academy more than once a year to give people choices on times that work best for them.) The summer session of the Academy will be offered at a site that can be combined with a family vacation, although participants will contract to come to all sessions. On the cruises, sessions will be for a few hours a day so participants can also join their families daily for activities. Academy sessions offered during the school year will be shorter in numbers of days because each day will have 9 hours of "seat time."

For those who are interested in the Leadership Academy but have not had the five day or Foundational Training, we are also piloting a program for districts that aren't ready or don't currently wish to have the Foundational Training but do want to promote the concept of having a few key people in the district become highly knowledgeable and skilled. We will have two Leadership Seminars per year on various topics related to prevention, inservicing, organizational and administrative issues, the the nuts and bolts of crisis response.

Content areas for the Leadership Seminars include:
- Philosophy of CMI's prevention, intervention and response to crises
- Organizational options - from district teams to regional collaborative teams
- Components in building, district and collaborative teams
- Safe Rooms
- Overview of trauma
- The "Map of Crisis" and the "Map of Catastrophic Events"
- Assessing your building and district readiness
- Threat assessments, bomb threats and many smaller content areas of focus

These seminars are designed to empower the participant to come back to the district and make improvements in organization and response capacity, but this does not take the place of a Foundational Training.

Leadership academies will offer continuing professional development credit or graduate credit trough Western Oregon University at the cost of their fee plus $50. For those who want hours credited by their particular professional associations (LCSW, nursing, counseling, etc.) we must have three months lead time to process our course through their required certification process. This is also true for state mandated professional development (such as Act 48 in PA).
