Grief, Loss & Bereavement (1/2 day or 1 day)
Overview: All we learn about helping students and staff grieve also has terrific pay-off for participants in their personal lives as well, because grief and loss are just part of life. This workshop addresses the individual's "tasks" of grief and provides insight on structuring responses at the building level to support those in need while continuing to run a tight ship. Goals: Participants will gain an understanding of grief, the process of reconciling or coming to terms with loss, how to support that process and take advantage of the "teachable moments" that such times provide for improving student attitude and school climate. Intended audience: Administrators, counselors, school psychologists, school social workers, teachers, paraprofessionals, others. Content: "Tasks" of grief, the effect of a death to school climate and the student body, reconciliation of loss, advantages of schools responding well, administrative tips, skills for counselors, teachers, others.
